Top Ways to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh

A bouquet of flowers can transform any dull spaces to a vibrant one. A fresh bouquet can brighten up any room and fill the area with a sweet fragrance. However, the joy is short lived since flowers don’t last long and wither and die.

So, you may want to keep a Valentine’s Day or Graduation Day bouquet blooming and lasting for a long time. Here are a few tips to keep the buds blooming for long using mostly household ingredients:

  • Soda: Don’t discard the last drops of soda in your bottle. Empty around 1/4 cup in the water in a vase full of cut flowers. The sugar content of the soda will keep the blooms fresh for a longer time. If you want to display flowers in a clear vase with clear water use soda like 7 up or Sprite.
  • Hair Spray: It keeps your hair in place, but in addition, sprits of hair spray can keep your flowers fresh for a long time. Stand around a foot away from the bouquet and give a fast spray on the back of the leaves and flowers.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: All of us want to keep cut flowers in full bloom for a long time. One way is to add two table spoons of sugar mixed with 2 table spoons apple cider vinegar into a vase of water before keeping the flowers. Ensure that the water is changed (with more sugar and vinegar), every few days to preserve the blooms for a long time.
  • Vodka: The key to keep flowers in good shape is to kill any bacteria in the water and restore nourishment to the flowers which they would have got if they had not been cut from their plants. Pour a few drops of any spirit like vodka in the vase water along with a spoon of sugar. The Vodka has anti-bacterial action and the sugar nourishes the blooms. Replace the water every other day.
  • Aspirin: A tried and tested formula for keeping flowers fresh. Put an aspirin in crushed form in the vase of water before keeping flowers. Remember to change the water every few days.

  • Bleach: You can ensure longevity of flowers by adding ¼ tsp of bleach in one litre of vase water. An alternative recipe is 3 drops bleach and 1 tsp sugar in a single quart of water. This prevents water from becoming cloudy and inhibits bacterial growth.
  • Coins: Your bunch of cut flowers will last longer if you add a cube of sugar and a copper coin to the vase of water. The copper inside coins is said to have acidification action which prevents bacteria growth.
  • Sugar: Create your own preservatives to keep flowers fresh. Mix 3 tbsp sugar and 2 table spoon white vinegar in one quart of warm water. While you are filling the vase, ensure cut stems are covered by 7-10 cm of water preparation.
  • Listerine anti-septic: Kills bacteria like it kills plaque. Pour a cap full of mouth wash into the water.

These are the ways to preserve cut flowers for a long time. Take flower delivery and keep the flowers fresh and blooming in decorative vases.
